From Illness to Anomie: An Anthropological Study on the Impact of Social Construction of Diseases on Criminal Behaviors

Abstract:  Crime is a social deviant behavior, while illness is an abnormal state of the body. The social construction of diseases is closely related to anomie and deviant behaviors. In the research on the relationship between social order and diseases, existing studies have focused more on the impact of anomie on diseases, but have not paid attention to the social and cultural significance of diseases themselves and their important influence on anomie. Diseases are the medium that strips away the subject and self-concept. This article studies the important influence of diseases on anomie and even crime from three aspects: self-interpretation of diseases, social metaphor, and social identity. This process presents a path of "uncertainty of life expectancy - secondary benefits of diseases - gaining group identity through resistance". Detailed research on the relationship between diseases and crime can not only provide new ideas for social governance, but also meaningfully upgrade the classic theory of "anomie" in sociology and anthropology.
