Why not Change Jobs? A Study on the Career Choice Behavior of Art Practitioners based on Chinese Opera Actors

Abstract: From the cultural perspective of “art-actor”, this paper discusses the social and cultural factors of Chinese opera actors who still stick to this trip in the context of the downturn of the opera industry. Based on the case study of the professional perseverance of Henan opera actors in Baishi, it is found that a series of cultural practices of opera actors to adapt to their professional difficulties have reconstructed their living world. In the process of cultural practice, the actors immersed themselves in the opera texts to achieve self-resocialization, reached emotional commonality with the opera voices, and role-played themselves in the opera performances. With the help of the liminal time and space of opera art, the understanding of the language of opera, the “projection-identity” experience of the characters’ lives, and the sense of identity provided by the audience, the living world of the actors is reconstructed, and it is manifested in the intentional establishment of professionalism and artist image. The results show that the universal economic rational logic in the study of professional behavior is not fully applicable to the art profession, and the cultural power of art can enable practitioners to construct a unique meaning world and influence their professional behavior choices.
