Tradition of Rites and Music and Characteristics of Xun Tzu’s Political Philosophy

Abstract:      Among different interpretations of Xun Tzu’s political philosophy, there is a paradigm conflict between the two interpretive principles of “the unity of Propriety and Righteousness” and “the unity of Rites and Music”. To make a choice, it is essential not only to examine Xun Tzu’s inheritance and development of this cultural tradition within the ideological framework of the pre-Qin Confucian rites and music culture, but also to hinge on Xun Tzu’s stance towards rites and music. The purpose of Xun Tzu’ s political philosophy cannot be encapsulated by the theory of “the unity of Propriety and Righteousness”. For instance, in terms of Xun Tzu’s specific attitude towards propriety, righteousness, the Book of Poetry , and the Book of Documents ,his genuine stance is not to exalt propriety and righteousness while deprecating the latter two. Moreover, from the perspective of Xun Tzu’s inheritance of the cultural tradition of the Zhou Dynasty, the Book of Poetry, Book of Documents, Book of Rites , and Book of Music can represent the basic content of the cultural tradition in Xun Tzu’s mind. According to Xun Tzu’s philosophy, rites and music possess distinct natures of emotion and reason,
different functions of uniting and differentiating, as well as disparate roles in governing the human mind, namely, “penetrating the essence and adapting to changes” and “manifesting sincerity and eradicating falsehood”. These essential and functional disparities between rites and music indicate that they cannot be simply integrated or substituted. Thus, it becomes evident that, compared with “the unity of Propriety and Righteousness”, “the unity of Rites and Music” can more comprehensively encompass all of Xun Tzu’s thoughts on the rule of rites and music. In accordance with the interpretation principle of “the unity of Rites and Music”, the fundamental nature of Xun Tzu’s political philosophy can be defined as the politics of rites and music
