Viewing Handicraft through a Lens: Influencing Factors Model of a Multidimensional Short Video Practice by Intangible Cultural Heritage Craftspeople
Abstract: Intangible cultural heritage (ICH) is a form of living culture carried by the practical activities of ICH bearers, and ICH craftspeople carry out mediated cultural practices on short-video platforms, which are dedicated to preserving the local cultural lineage and promoting traditional handicrafts. This study conducts semi-structured in-depth interviews based on the short-video practices of Douyin's non-heritage craftspeople, and uses grounded theory as a research methodology to construct a model of the influencing factors of multidimensional short-video practices and to elucidate the patterns of relationships between different actors. This study found that human actors influence spatial practices, reconfiguring internal and external social relations, human and non-human actors influence embodied and symbolic practices, acting on embodied performance and symbolic creation. Compared to the platform, ICH craftspeople are in a marginal position of resistance, with limited support from peers, friends and family, and users as fans. ICH craftspeople and technologies, institutions, and cultures are mutually shaped. This study accordingly puts forward suggestions to promote the short-video practice of ICH craftsmen in order to help the dissemination of traditional culture.
