Humanistic Implications of Engels’ View of History: Refuting Norman Levine’s “Empty Space of Human Theory” on Engels’ Historical View

Abstract: Norman Levine criticized Engels for not delving into the realm of hunters in his view of history, which was an “empty space of human theory”. Analyzing Engels’ text, it is found that his historical perspective has never overlooked “human”. Specifically, the focus on “human reality” led to a direct transformation of Engels’ early view of history. The understanding of “human labor activities” constituted Engels’ understanding of “practice” in his historical view. The exposition of the theory of “historical synergy” became an effective proof for Engels to break away from “economic determinism”. The pursuit of “human freedom and liberation” was the logical goal of Engels’ “communism” ideology. These key understandings constitute the humanistic implications in Engels’ view of history and have become an important component of Marxist humanistic theory.
