The Essential Goal and Fallacies of the“Zomia”Theory:An Investigation of Academic History

Abstract: “Zomia”originally introduced by Schende as an academic concept for examining the historical and social progression of trans-regional mountain communities, was later adopted and expanded by Scott to encompass the idea of“non-state spaces of escape from domination”, thus establishing it as a theoretical framework for analyzing peripheral state societies, subsequently gaining traction within the academic community. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the origin, dissemination, and scholarly
discourse surrounding the concept and theory of“Zomia”in both Eastern and Western academic circles. It critically examines Scott’s theory of “Zomia”, focusing on its essential goal and fallacies, while also addressing the prevailing issues within current research on the academic history of“Zomia”.
