The Impact of Personality Configurations on Individual Long-Term Performance: An Empirical Analysis Based on fsQCA and NCA

Abstract: Based on the personality grouping framework, this study combines two emerging approaches, QCA and NCA, to analyze the relationship between personality and individual long-term performance from a grouping perspective. It is found that (1) a single personality element does not constitute a necessary condition for generating high family income, and multiple composite personality groupings of transformed, superimposed, and combined forms of personality and decision variables have stronger explanatory power for high or low family income. (2) For the high family income personality grouping pattern, the leader personality appears to be particularly prominent, the leader personality alone, with the other two types of personality (helping or achievement) of the transformation, superposition and the results of high family income corresponds to. (3) Decision variables such as era background, education and length of service cause significant impact on the relationship between personality grouping pattern and performance. Comparing the results of realizing the high family income grouping pattern in 2015, 2018 and 2020, it can be found that: helpful personality and leadership personality appear more frequently, both of which are core conditions. (4) Specific personality types are able to avoid the negative effects of family of origin. Family wealth tends to promote the long-term performance of various personality groupings. This paper also explores the pathways through which personality groupings lead to low income, and low-income personality groupings are similarly affected by family-of-origin environments and individual decision-making variables. This paper introduces the perspective of personality grouping to explore the impact of the coupling between personality grouping, family-of-origin exchange and decision-making variables on the long-term performance of individuals, and the findings are of great theoretical and practical significance for revealing the complex causal link between personality and performance and the paths of high-performance personality groupings.
