Cognitive Literary Studies: A Keyword in Critical Theory

Abstract: Cognitive literary studies, as a cutting-edge school of literary criticism, aim to apply theories of cognitive science to expatiating on the literary mind, and have brought up scintillating viewpoints as regards poetic functions, the act of reading, literary affect, and
theory of fictionality among others, all contributing to an unprecedented academic influence. For the present there have evolved such interdisciplinary subfields as cognitive poetics, cognitive rhetoric, cognitive stylistics, cognitive narratology, cognitive aesthetics of reception, cognitive cultural studies, and cognitive historicism. Given that these subfields, far from being a unified disciplinary system, either pursue their respective goals or intersect or even overlap each other in specific researches, this paper intends to revisit the theoretical source trio that has led to the genesis of cognitive literary studies—cognitive linguistics, cognitive
psychology as well as cognitive neuroscience, and, by illustrating canonical scholarship under this tripartite categorization, detect the ground plan for the global cognitive literary studies.
