Index: A Keyword in Critical Theory
Abstract: The index is a fundamental type of sign classified by Charles Sanders Peirce in his second trichotomy of signs, characterized by its direct existential relation to the object it denotes. Because it can faithfully reflect the object, the index is often employed to examine and verify the existence of actual facts, such as "real connections," "existential relations," or "spatiotemporal locations." This endows the index with both the function of referring to reality and the potential to uncover truth. However, with the profound changes brought about by digital transformation, the existential basis of the index has been challenged, its referential capacity questioned, and its theoretical discussions have increasingly moved beyond the framework of Peirce’s semiotics. This article first outlines Peirce’s trichotomy of signs to clarify the original classification, semiosis, and principal features of the index. It then takes digital photography as a case study to examine the crisis of signification facing the index and further argues that the radical shifts in the relationship between sign and reality necessitate expanding semiotic intellectual resources and updating its theoretical foundations.
