Biofiction: A keyword in Critical Theory

Abstract: Biofiction has grown rapidly into a dominant literary form in the past 30 years, alongside which its genre theories have also developed rapidly. By differentiating itself from related genres such as the historical novel and biography, Biofiction has established itself as a distinct genre, demanding new criteria to read and evaluate related works. Biofiction writers, while upholding essential ethical responsibilities towards their characters and readers, enjoy full autonomy of art to create their works, guided by aesthetic principles rather than bound by the truth obligations of biography or history. Writers freely draw upon historical facts to provide alternative truth, and transform individual cases, through the interplay of history and fiction, into metaphorical signifiers reflecting broader attitudes toward human existence. Biofiction therefore acquires important functions as cultural intervention, providing complex multi-faceted literary portraits that challenge reductive and totalizing master narratives of History.
